What’s The Difference Between A Surge Protector And UPS?

Based on personal experience, there’s quite a bit of confusion within small businesses and nonprofit organizations as to the difference between a power strip, a surge protector and a battery backup (also known as an Uninterruptible Power Supply). Here’s a quick cheat sheet to help understand the important differences between these power protection devices.

Power Strips – Power strips are simple, inexpensive devices that enable plugging multiple electrical devices into a single outlet. Power strips do not provide any protection from potentially damaging brownouts, surges or spikes. Nor do power strips provide protection against data loss, in the event of a power outage, or network equipment protection.

Surge Protectors – Surge protectors are typically more expensive than power strips but less expensive than battery backups. Some surge protectors provide network protection, as well as safeguards against electrical spikes. Surge protectors do no protect against data loss in the event of a power failure.

Battery Backups – Battery backups (Louisville Geek recommends APC’s products both for their quality and warranty coverage when properly registered), provide protection against electrical brownouts, surges and spikes. Many models also include network protection. While more expensive, when properly configured battery backups also protect against data loss in the event of a power failure.

I think it’s important to note that surge protectors have a finite amount of surge protection. I don’t think most people realize that those can “run out” of protection if you’ve already encountered too many surges.
