New Microsoft Patch Breaks ZoneAlarm

If you’re a ZoneAlarm firewall user, a new Microsoft security update is making your life difficult. Here’s what you need to know.

On Tuesday, July 8th, Microsoft released security patch MS08-037. That patch is a critical fix designed to protect against Windows Domain Name System (DNS) exploits.

Following the patch’s installation, ZoneAlarm users are reporting they are unable to access the Internet. This is because of changes the Microsoft security patch makes that apparently do not agree with the ZoneAlarm firewall database.

The solution, ZoneAlarm users, is to reset the ZoneAlarm database. However, the process isn’t super simple.

In the case of some of my Louisville clients, the problem was solved by uninstalling and reinstalling the ZoneAlarm firewall software after the Windows security patch in question was deployed. That, indeed, does the trick.
