How To Disable Automatic Updates

While disabling Automatic Updates isn’t a step I recommend, many clients ask how they can turn off this feature in Windows.

In Windows XP:

1. Click Start.
2. Select Control Panel.
3. Double-click Automatic Updates. If the option doesn’t appear, ensure you’re in Classic View (select Switch To Classic View within the menu that should appear toward the upper left of the screen).
4. Select the Turn Off Automatic Updates option (the last radio button that appears at the bottom).
5. Click Apply.
6. Click OK to close the Automatic Updates option.

In Windows Vista:

1. Click Start.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Click Windows Update (if the option is not present, select Classic View from the navigation menu found on the left side of the screen).
4. Select Change Settings (from the left-hand menu).
5. Select Never Check For Updates (Not Recommended).
6. Click OK.
