End Vista’s "Are You Sure" Nag Reminders

One of the most common complaints I receive from Louisville computer users is Windows Vista’s consistent, repeated nagging question: A program needs your permission to continue.

This menu appears as part of Windows Vista’s User Account Control (UAC) security feature, which is supposed to warn users whenever a program is attempting to install or make significant changes to your system. The only problem is the warning appears too often, according to most users. As a result, users have become desensitized to the warning. Most everyone ends up just clicking the Continue button whenever the warning message appears (rendering the warning, essentially, useless).

Many users have asked whether Windows Vista’s User Account Control feature can be disabled. The answer is yes. Follow these steps to disable Windows Vista’s User Account Control:

1. Click Start.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Double click User Accounts (if using Classic View). Otherwise, the User Accounts and Family Safety option will appear. If this option appears, click the Classic View option in the left navigation bar and then select User Accounts.
4. Select Turn User Account Control on or off.
5. Click Continue.
6. Clear the checkbox for Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.
7. Click OK.
8. Ensure any open files are saved and click Restart Now.
