Configure Office 2007 To Save Files Using 2003 Formats
Frequently I hear the same complaint from Microsoft Office 2007 users. The problem is Microsoft’s newest Office suite (including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft PowerPoint) automatically saves files using Office’s new XML-based file formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx and .pubx).
Consquently, without Microsoft’s Compatibility Kit, staff, clients and colleagues using older versions of Microsoft Office (such as Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Office 2003) cannot open, view or edit those files.
Microsoft Office 2007 users can configure Microsoft Office 2007 to automatically save files using the older, more compatible file formats. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Open the application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.) you wish to configure to save files using the older file formats by default.
2. Click the Office button (this is the large circular button found in the top left corner of the screen).
3. Select the Options button (which is named Excel Options in Microsoft Excel, Word Options in Microsoft Word, etc.).
4. Click the Save Entry found within the menu bar on the screen’s left-hand side.
5. Change the value within the Save Files In This Format box to use the 97-2003 file format.
6. Click OK.
